Community Volunteer

Our missionary efforts focused around the Becados scholarship student program which met twice a day in our live-in community center. We also assisted local volunteers in maintaining a kitchen, classroom, library, computer room, clinic, bathroom and chapel. On average, there were four live-in volunteers in Casa San Juan and two others in another two colonies or neighborhoods.

 

  1. English tutor

  • for children in the neighborhood

  • for private school students on scholarships who came to a 5 day-a-week after school study program in the community center

  • for a college student studying for the TOEFL e

  • for three young children in their home twice a week: paid

   2. Catechist / Religious Education

  • Weekly classes for grade school children using custom lesson plans and games

   3. Youth Group Leader

  • Weekly high school youth group who met in our community center

  • Bible studies, games, movie trips, group discussions, singing, dancing, video production, cooking classes, arts and crafts, prayer

  • Led Holy Week youth group events

  4. Live-In Community Center Volunteer

  • Delivered Christmas care packages to select neighborhood families with volunteers and families

  • Cleaned and maintained community center facility and equipment, including roof water reservoir and below ground water holding tank, computers and chapel

  • Played games with kids in the streets, toured the neighborhood and visited families

  • Assisted in student outing to San Luis Potosi, Zacatecas and Salinas Mexico

  • Took in a working homeless man for several months

  • Assisted and facilitated Becados students in weekly car washing program at the Congregation's chapel to raise funds to pay the internet and electricity bills

  • Financial and time management for our community house (bills, food, errands, etc.)

  • Volunteer waiter for La Noche Flamenca fundraising event
